Bred from the record-breaking “Airslayer” Gymkhana car, Subaru’s Project Midnight looks to take things to a whole new level. Today, Subaru revealed their Project Midnight, another one off unit based on the current WRX. The car will make its debut this week at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in England July 11-14.
Subaru states that the WRX: Project Midnight focuses on a single objective, “outright speed.” The lightweight wide-bodied WRX makes 670 horsepower from its 2.0 liter turbocharged boxer 4 engine with a 9500RPM Redline. That power will of course be delivered via All-Wheel-Drive. The lightweight coming from its carbon fiber body panels and a significant weight loss in its chassis as well. Project Midnight weighs in at only 2,469lbs. That’s almost 300lbs less than “Airslayer” and 1,000lbs less than the WRX you can buy at your local Subaru retailer.

Project Midnight will be piloted by Subaru driver Scott Speed. The 41-year-old American has a Platinum FIA license and has raced everything from NASCAR to F1, IndyCar to Rally. The car itself will be a tarmac focused unit featuring a massively enlarged version of the dirt car’s rear wing and feature a specially derived tarmac suspension geometry.
“Subaru Motorsports USA and the team at Vermont SportsCar have delivered an absolute beast. When driving the car it clearly has rallycross roots, but the wider tires, track, and geometry give it a very unique feel and incredible grip. The ultimate driving machine; half RX, half sports car – a true joy to drive,” said Speed.
