Ford Performance’s GTD Smashes Nürburgring Target

Nestled in the Eifel Mountains in central Germany rests 12.94 miles of twisting, uneven, narrow tarmac often referred to as “The Green Hell.” The Nürburgring’s Nordschleife. It is the most challenging race track on the planet and is used as the one true judge of a performance car’s capability. Brands from the Americas, Asia, and Europe use the 73 turns of the North Loop (Nordschleife) to prove they have the best cars on Earth.

When Ford introduced its 815-HP Mid-Engine Mustang GTD last year, it promised the most extreme track monster to come out of Dearborn. And boy, did it deliver. The goal: a sub-seven-minute lap time. If they succeeded, they would become the first American car to do so.

German race driver Dirk Müller took the 2025 Mustang GTD to its limits and sealed Ford CEO Jim Farley of a sub-seven minute lap time that he laid out in August of 2023 when FoMoCo debuted the GTD. The GTD is only the sixth stock production car in history to break the seven-minute time on the Nordschleife and the fifth-fastest in the sports production class around the Ring. And best of all, Ford will try the lap again as they feel there is more time to squeeze out of the GTD when they try again next year.

The Mustang GTD

2025 Mustang GTD

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD was unveiled in August 2023 as the limitless race car that Ford CEO Jim Farley knew they could build. The GTD is the fastest and most powerful Mustang to emerge from Dearborn. The 815-HP Mustang GTD will be priced at the $325,000 mark, within sight of its competition from Italy and Germany.

Powered by a supercharged 5.2-litre dry-sump V8 engine, pushing not only 815 horsepower but also 664 lbft of torque. 7,650 RPMs allow the GTD to scream to a claimed 202mph top speed with a Drag Reduction System (DRS) as seen on F1 cars. The DRS will change the rear wing’s angle and flaps underneath to allow for optimal airflow both above and below the vehicle.

The GTD will be one of the most exclusive cars Ford has ever built. Dearborn plans to build between 1,000 and 2,000 units, compared to the 1,350 GTs that the company built from 2016 to 2022.
